Strasburg 2022

Norfolk & Western 611

A big run day while this locomotive was on site

#611, the only surviving J Class 4-8-4 Northern type was up for FRA boiler inspections at
Strasburg and in the few weeks before heading home some special events were scheduled.
At the very end, November 11, 12, and 13, Strasburg's normal tourist runs alternated
between #611 and their resident 4-8-0, #475, a former N&W locomotive they own.

Trips left every half hour, so full passing siding protocol was being displayed
on this single track line. Lots of steam whistles and huffing and puffing.

1st Run of Morning
#611 has first crack, there are
no turn-arounds so eastbound
locos run tender forward, doing
a run-around to a 'normal'
poSition returning to the depot.

Between Trains
A common sight in this part of Pennsylvania.

Echo Demo
There is a spot along here where
large structures and a hill to
the south often return and echo.
So eastbound trains typically stop
and demonstrate. #611's low
rumbling chime doesn't do as
well as #475's single note.

Working a bit here
(And yes, jerk in white car
could have stayed back a bit!)

#611 Westbound
Here we caught a little sunshine
and a more expansive view.

#475 Echo Stop
A careful listen may catch
an echo bouncing back here.
